Why attend the Flamenco Guitar Masterclass?

Thomas Lorenzo will be holding two very intimate Flamenco guitar masterclasses in November 2015 in Melbourne. The first class is targeted at guitarists who can play guitar but have limited improvisational skills. They have played a nylon string guitar and are interested in how to play Flamenco on their own. The second class is targeted at more advanced guitar players who want to expand their improvisational skills in a Flamenco setting. In both classes you will learn Flamenco styles, rhythms, harmonic structures and techniques.

Why attend the Blues Guitar Masterclass?

Thomas Lorenzo will be holding two very intimate Blues guitar masterclasses in November 2015 in Melbourne. The first class is targeted at guitarists who can play some Blues but feel they are stuck on the same sound and licks. They are not satisfied with their playing and are looking for a fresh approach to their soloing and accompaniment. The second class is targeted at more advanced Blues players who want to expand their improvisational skills in a more contemporary Jazz Blues setting.

Why attend the Jazz Guitar Masterclass?

Thomas Lorenzo will be holding two very intimate Jazz masterclasses in November 2015 in Melbourne. The first class is targeted at players who are new to Jazz and want to learn how to play the genre. The second class is targeted at more advanced players who know their chords and scales and want to improvise in a more satisfying and creative manner.

You may choose to attend only one of the classes, but for those who want the full benefit of the masterclass we recommend attending both as the second class expands upon the content of the first one.

Please refer to the first part of our introduction to guitar learning by following these links.

Guitar for BeginnersGuitar Lessons. Module 1: Developing Melody Skills.

Let´s take a look at more specific skills we need to master to achieve a satisfying self expression through our guitar with a chosen song:

Rhythm skills imparted at our Melbourne School of Music

All music may convey clear emotions only through an understandable rhythm. Such is the underlining crucial factor of expression.

As a guitar student, we must be able to play in a set tempo right from the early stages of our learning. Once this is achieved, we will start having great fun as we understand why we need technique, and how we can achieve a satisfying self expression thorough our guitar.

Part of our rhythmic skills are developed through how we accompany a give song .

In Module 1 the guitar student in my lessons will learn how to:

  • Strum with muted or open strings strings.

  • Strum in binary and tertiary subdivision

  • Apply accents to an accompaniment to help create intensity

  • Strum learning how to reinforce bass notes creating patterns that push the rhythm forward

In Module 2 at our Melbourne School of Music  the guitar student in my lessons will learn how to:

  • Adapt their strumming to a solo situation ( playing alone ) versus a group mode ( playing with other instruments )

  • Add tensions to create harmonic movement

  • Define chords and rhythm by single note picking

  • Create bass lines by adding inversions of bar chords

Please stay tuned for more.

How to hold the guitar? Beginners intermediate and advanced students

It is quite common to hold the guitar in a manner that causes injury in the long run to the performer.

In this video I share with you some basic insights on how to position your left hand and your fingers on the fretboard.

These tips are a result of having played the guitar for over 30 years and have never had any injury what so ever.

But please remember to enjoy yourselves in the process as this is the objective we must strive for in our playing.

Please follow this link to my guitar studio to view the video.
